Buckingham palace

Buckingham Palace has about 600 rooms and 20 hectares (50 acres) of gardens. It is noted for its fine collection of paintings. Buckingham Palace became the official royal palace and effective head quarters of the British monarch when Queen Victoria took the throne in 1837. Buckingham Palace has served as the official London residence of Britain's sovereigns since 1837. The palace hosts many official events and receptions held by the Queen and Members of the Royal Family.

Buckingham Palace is usually associated with vibrant displays of wealth and grandeur, and this summer opening will be no different. For 2009, a special exhibition will accompany the opening of the State Rooms, which celebrates the 60th anniversary of the London Declaration, which established the British sovereign as the head of the Commonwealth. Buckingham Palace is entered through the impressive Grand Hall, which has ivory painted walls with gilded coving and marble columns. Two grand broad marble staircases lead up to the State Apartments. Buckingham Palace History reflects that at the time, the cost of this expansion was estimated to be one of the largest sums ever spent on a palace to date.

Buckingham Palace is one of the world's most familiar buildings and more than 50,000 people visit the Palace each year as guests to banquets, lunches, dinners, receptions and the Royal Garden Parties. Visitors are allowed access by and organised tour to some areas of the Palace. Buckingham Palace finally became the official royal palace of the British monarch on the accession of Queen Victoria in 1837. The last major structural additions were made in the late 19th and early 20th century, including the present-day public face of Buckingham Palace. Buckingham Palace has been the official abode of British royalty since 1837. The forecourt is the setting for one of London's most popular tourist events: The Changing of the Guard.

Buckingham Palace's most famous spectacle is the vastly overrated Changing of the Guard (daily Apr-July and on alternating days for the rest of the year). The new guard, marching behind a band, comes from either the Wellington or Chelsea barracks and takes over from the old guard in the forecourt of the palace. Buckingham Palace is one of the world's most recognisable buildings, yet few people have visited the magnificent interior. This virtual tour gives you that opportunity. Buckingham Palace stands amazingly tall and is one of the most instantly recognisable landmarks in the world. It has 828,818 square foot of floorspace and it is absolutely gigantic!
