Health care firms employ large numbers of workers in professional and service occupations. Together, these two occupational groups account for 3 out of 4 jobs in the industry. Health care professionals may include physicians , dentists , support staff, nurses , therapists , psychologists , pharmacists , chiropractors , and optometrists . Health care is necessary for life, being healthy is necessary for liberty (people don't want you going out when you're sick), and I don't know about you, but I'm not very happy when I'm sick. I'll help you if you help me.
Health care is the second-fastest-growing sector of the U.S. Women represent nearly 80% of the health care work force. Health care is intensely personal and costly for families, and even small policy changes have potentially huge financial implications for them as well as other stakeholders. If successful ways of addressing the health spending challenge are to be devised, it is critical to reflect on the underlying values and moral choices associated with any policy approach. Health care institutions will need thousands of additional accountants, auditors, personnel specialists, directors of personnel, attorneys, buyers, computer programmers, computer support specialists, chemists, engineers, drafters, computer operators, photographers, file clerks, secretaries, purchasing clerks, and food service helpers. Furthermore, employment growth is not limited to the traditional full-time job.
Health Care for America also rests on the conviction that the Medicare model has a proven track record—and a huge amount of untapped potential—when it comes to controlling costs and improving care. Sustaining Medicare's vital promise to the aged and disabled does not require abandoning the Medicare model, as critics of the program frequently claim. Health care and consumer advocates appreciate the efforts of the Patrick Administration and the Legislature in making this positive first step toward restoring critical health coverage. However, we are deeply concerned about the well-being of this population. Health Care Ethics faculty serve as the Editors-in-Chief of the Journal of Law, Medicine, and Ethics and serve on the editorial boards of many other journals.
Health care is not a right. Since we have such a murky understanding of what rights are in today's world, many governments still pretend that it is, only to see increased regulation and bureaucracy stifle the delivery of good care. Health care isn't alone in this myth that its somehow currently under the auspices of the free market. Financial services, real estate, energy, telecommunications are all heavily regulated and in each instance it generates huge and unhealthy bubbles followed by massive "dead periods" and "contractions". Health care is not an issue for Rep. King because we who don't have health insurance pay for Rep.
Health care is a service, which we all need, and none of us are better served by placing our lives and our doctors under coercive bureaucratic control. Health care is in trouble these days because medicine has gotten so good. The elderly and disabled, who represent the most expensive group of Medicaid recipients, are not complaining about the fact that new medications and technologies permit them to live longer and healthier lives. Health care is one of the few places — defense is another — that the government works more efficiently and more effectively than the private sector. That's just a fact.
