Blogging is new enough that its borders - national, linguistic, substantive, formal, etc. To assume the same contextual frames for blogging that are invoked by US journalism seems reductive. Blogging is simply too big, too impersonal, and lacks the intimacy that drew me to it. Blogging is a tool one of many that can help journalists and writers of all types connect with readers, communicate information and help people make sense of our increasingly complicated world. Blogging won't solve everything, and in five, 10 or 20 years or sooner, something may replace it. Blogging is ideally suited to follow the plan for promoting creativity advocated by pioneering molecular biologist Max Delbruck. Delbruck's "Principle of Limited Sloppiness" states we should be sloppy enough so that unexpected things can happen, but not so sloppy that we can't find out that it did. Blogging is not a direct response medium. It is a relationship medium. Blogging is hard now. How do you compete with blogs created by established media empires who create blogs? Blogging is a creative an new medium for distributing information, ideas, and opinions. Much like a new spoken language it has taken time for it to evolve and mature. And afterwords languages take even more time for people to take the language seriously and learn it. Blogging is more than just a neato new web platform, and while it certainly benefits from social bookmarking, it is not necessary, nor reliant on it IMHO. Having said that, I recall a report from the Gartner Group recently that declared blogging to peak in 2007, followed by a decline. Blogging is a great way to chase your dreams. Interestingly, my blog is actually about chasing dreams and my chronicle of how I'm doing it but that's beside the point! Blogging is an easy way to earn if you are a really good writer. That's why people starts blogging! Blogging is about publishing. It is about making your work public. Blogging is therefore to writing what extreme sports are to athletics: more free-form, more accident-prone, less formal, more alive. It is, in many ways, writing out loud. Blogging is like anything else, it takes a lot of hard work and patience. At the end, success rate for making money with a blog is probably lower than someone making money by starting their own business. Blogging is a team sport and the online magazines like Techcrunch and other don't team up. In fact they create walled gardens to defend their page view status - unlike collaborative bloggers who earn respect and money from their content - in the form of consulting or thought pieces. Blogging is much closer to the informal discussions you have in the hallway or via email than it is to peer-reviewed papers. We have to convince faculty members (and other people involved in science) that blogging is the new email. Blogging is a whole different hi tech field. Learning to blog it like learning to ride a bicycle. You have to first put one together, then learn to ride it so you can fall off and hurt your pride, then pick yourself up and do it all over again.
